FAQs

  • No! All are welcome, whether you are an established writer looking to build on your writerly routine, or an absolute beginner, you are welcome in the Write Owls. We are very happy to welcome international writers to our online sessions - just note all sessions are held according to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)!

  • Join us via Zoom. A link will be sent to your inbox 24 hours before the session is due to begin. If you have not received the link please first check your Junk, if you still cannot find it please email us here.

  • Yes, no, who knows! Tons of fantastically talented writers wrote and created long before Creative Writing Masters, workshops and courses ever existed so of course writing teachers are not needed. However, what we firmly believe in at Write Owls is that dedicating time and space to your writing works wonders and that guidance and community serves creativity.

  • A lovely exercise book/pad, pens, pencils, rubbers, an open-mind. Optional extras: a hot beverage! (Make mine an Earl Grey with oat milk.) A candle or some incense to light as the sky darkens.

  • Nope! Participants are under no obligation to share their work at the end of sessions. Rather our emphasis is on process and creative attention in an expansive and generative environment. There is always space allowed for a moment of reflection and an opportunity to share work if one wishes at the end of our Swoop-in Sessions and for feedback at the close of courses but this is far from mandatory! For those who wish to receive personalised feedback there is an option to receive this from a Write Owls tutor. More on this here.

  • A swoop-in session is a weekly hour long (online) session that features readings, prompts, writing and reflecting time. More on this on our Home Page. A creative writing course is more specific and structured, it is longer than an hour and may stretch over several weeks. It will be themed. More precise information on upcoming courses can be found here.

  • £12. 50 Pay via PayPal here. If you have any difficulty with PayPal or do not have access to it please message us here and alternative payment can be set up.

  • This will vary depending on the course. Average costs range from £25 for a short day course to 190 for a five week course of two- hour sessions. More detailed info on our creative writing courses will be coming soon!

  • It is! We offer bespoke zoom or in person sessions with Emma or other highly- experienced Write Owl tutors. Contact us directly to discuss your literary goals and schedule. Book here.

  • Write Owl founder Emma Silverthorn struggles with mornings! She has always been this way - just ask her mother - little Emma was by all accounts very grumpy at 7am getting ready for school….and for a long time she assumed this was a character deficit so she was delighted to learn during a chat with a fellow teacher - a science teacher in fact - that being ‘terrible’ in the mornings is partly down to genetics!

So if like Emma your chronotype favours evening activities then we are the creative community for you. Or perhaps, like 22 % of owls, you're crepuscular - most active at both dawn and dusk - lucky you!

Beyond this preference for communal activities at what this Write Owl views as a most salubrious hour, we see dusk in and of itself as a highly inspirational time; just think of the names for it alone - gloaming, twilight, evenfall. And after a day of activity, work, childcare, chores, socialising, exercise, or hermitting, (whatever it is you like to do during the day), there is that magic moment before full nightfall, that liminal place in which the mind is freed to play. An absolutely dreamy time.

However, being aware that sometimes the debris of the day may be a block to writing expressively we begin each session with a brief but impactful creative meditation. This is led by one of our two accomplished and wonderful meditation guides. Meditation guide Millie Proud is also a designer, nutritionist and yogi, more about Millie here. Meditation guide Emily Bour is also an artist, yogi, and teacher. More about Emily here and here.

Note: occasionally a Write Owl creative writing course might run in the daylight hours but never of course at too early an hour!

  • Yes! We adore collaborations here at Write Owl’s HQ! We work with visual artists, musicians, teachers, actors, yogis, and of course writers. Reach out here.

Curious about our art-work? These gorgeous owls were created by London artist David Horgan, more of his work can be found here and here.
